Data Security is nothing but information security, includes securing data from getting contaminated, stolen, protect from unauthorized users, avoid losing access to data, protect from cyberattacks or data breach.

Data Security is important in below basic aspects:

- Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS): Has guidelines for organization who deals with customer financial information needs to ensure how to protect cardholder details such as credit/debit card numbers and transactions.
- Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX): Its little different from other set of rules, SOX Act 2002 has rules and regulations in which companies needs to provide reporting and documentation about data security plans, policies and implementation, data risk handling and regular audits.
- California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA): Its a California equivalent of GDPR, that has broader view of private data. it has more factors to consider when protection a personal information of individual. For example, in a customer profile other than name, contact and address the individuals sex, hobbies, height, weight, behavior, attitudes ,aptitudes, intelligence and abilities also needs to be protected.
- Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA): It’s a Canada’s primary privacy law for the private sector. It regulates how businesses collect, use, and disclose personal information in the course of commercial business. Law defines how to safeguard personal information in private sector. For example, before sharing any personal data for commercial business, proper consent should be taken from an individual.
- ISO 27001: Also known as ISO/IEC 27001, is an international standard for information security management systems (ISMS). Issued by the International Standardizations for Organizations(ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This Act is specially for organizations who manages high volume of data such as Government Sectors, IT companies, Institutes etc. It help organizations establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve data security management.
- Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA): Its a part of Electronic Government Act: Defines a framework of guidelines and security standards to protect government information and operations. It includes classifying data based on sensitivity and encrypt it using require tools based on classification of sensitivity level.
